Today is the day! It’s day one of the Ontario Library Association’s 2017 Super Conference in Toronto. I love this conference with all my beating library heart, because it brings together librarians from all over to discuss issues and strategies and ideas that make us better. I’ve yet to walk away without a host of new ideas to bring back to my team that will allow us to serve our patrons more effectively in the future.
This year adds a new twist to my usual routine because I’m not just an attendee – I’m presenting! My colleague, Kat Drennan-Scace (Hamilton Public Library) and I will be presenting a session on the LoanStars program that connects librarians with soon-to-be released books, and asks them to vote for their favourites. It’s essentially the Library Reads program in the States, but in a Canadian format. We’re only a year old, but already making a difference, with over 800 Canadian librarians already on board, support from the Globe & Mail and Quill & Quire, but we want MORE (yes, we’re greedy like that). Collectively we’ve had the honour to read many award-winning books well before the rest of the world found out how great they were. As this amazing infographic (courtesy of BookNet Canada – they are AMAZING people) shows, the next Giller Prize winner may be waiting for you to read.
It has to be said that none of this is possible without the support of the publishers, including but not limited to Penguin Random House Canada, Simon & Schuster Canada, Hachette Book Group Canada, House of Anansi, Second Story Press, ECW, and many more. Additionally, BookNet Canada and the CELA have been integral to the success of this program.
If you are downtown and at the conference, do stop by. If you want to know more about our presentation, click here. We will have lots of great info, some chocolate and maybe even a few great reads to give away. Want to know more but can’t make the session? Check out this article from the Toronto Star, or check out the OLA website tomorrow as we will post our presentation online. See you there!
