Weekly Photo Challenge: Fleeting

To photograph is to hold one’s breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It’s at that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy.
~ Henri Cartier-Bresson

I love today’s theme: fleeting. There are so many emotions that can flit across someone’s face that it makes people watching absolutely fascinating to me.

There are also those moments where you catch sight of something lovely . At that time, when the elements align, the photo can be absolutely beautiful.

Sam and the Bubble

Fleeting. After reading Danielle’s post on the philosophy of photography — and her thoughts on taking photos to help us be more present and mindful — I’ve been thinking a lot about the fleeting moments in our days, and in our lives. The quiet, precious moments between the ones we love. A hummingbird in the backyard, among the blossoms. Chalk art on the sidewalk, with broken bits of colorful chalk left there, by the kids in the neighborhood. Or perhaps a glimpse into a rare occasion: A friend who never dances, grooving around on the dance floor. Forty-thousand fans cheering in a stadium, after a pitcher hits a grand slam. Or the sight of a double rainbow. Fleeting may also make you think of movement and change.

Some ideas to get you started:

  • Observing nature and capturing a quiet, special moment.
  • Experimenting with shots of movement.
  • Taking a snapshot of someone deep in thought (or alternatively, in mid-action).
  • Exploring a place that’s transient in nature (airports, stations, streets, etc.).

  1. Lovely photos and post. I especially love the bubble shot! And the laughter 🙂 Glad the interview could get your gears turning. Feel free to submit those two or other photos to Broken Light any time! -Danielle
